Colorado Poet Laureate David Mason Visits Ouray County
David Mason, Colorado poet laureate, has set the goal of touring all of Colorado’s 64 counties and is scheduled to visit Ouray County the weekend of October 14 and 15.
David Mason, Colorado poet laureate, has set the goal of touring all of Colorado’s 64 counties and is scheduled to visit Ouray County the weekend of October 14 and 15. In addition to meeting with students at the Ouray School and the Ridgway School, Mason will be greeting the community at a free public reception at the Ridgway Library, leading a poetry workshop through Weehawken Creative Arts, and presenting his work at a free poetry reading hosted by the Ouray Public Library and the Ouray County Performing Arts Guild.
Mason’s programs at the schools will include Friday morning and afternoon assemblies with the middle school and high school students. On Friday, October 14, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., the Ridgway Library reception will provide the public with an opportunity to meet the poet and speak informally about his writing. Mason’s Weehawken Creative Arts poetry workshop, on Saturday, October 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., entitled “Killer Openings: How to Get into a Poem,” will look at the beginnings of poems and how they draw us in. (A limited number of student and teacher reduced tuition spaces are available at $25 for local teachers and students to take advantage of this opportunity. At Saturday’s reading and book signing on October 15, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Venue Roscoe Fox in Ouray, attendees will be able to listen to Mason read selections of his highly praised work as well as purchase copies of his published work and have them signed by the poet laureate.
Mason is an accomplished poet and co-director of the creative writing program at Colorado College. In his role as poet laureate, Mason has presented the opening poem for the legislative session, visited local schools and read at numerous literary festivals. Mason plans to continue visiting schools, libraries, hospitals, business organizations and many others to share, teach and encourage poetry.
